Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a multinational giant out of India is teaming up with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to offer a virtual quantum computing research and development environment (TCS Quantum Computing Lab) utilizing Amazon Braket. This was announced at the AWS re:Invent conference this week.

Amazon Braket is an on-demand, managed service from AWS that provides access to quantum computing devices (see here for a list of hardware vendors on Braket) allowing enterprise users to explore, develop, and test business solutions in development environments such as TCS Quantum Computing Lab.

Commenting on their goals and focus areas for the TCS Quantum Computing Lab, Krishna Mohan, Global Head, AWS Business Unit at TCS,  says, “Our goal with the TCS Quantum Computing Lab on AWS is to show customers that quantum has arrived to offer real, accessible value for many different types of organizations. As such, we are not focused on individual industries, but broadly to any company who needs high-performance, data-intensive services. This can range from the life sciences for use-cases such as genomic sequencing, portfolio optimization with financial services, route optimization and anomaly detection to more general needs for large-scale pattern or anomaly recognition within images or data sets.”

TCS’s Investments in Quantum Computing

TCS has been involved in quantum computing over the last 4 years including investments in training and resources.  Krishna Mohan, explains – “Our investments to empower our customers with quantum on AWS include 200 employees trained in Quantum computing including the use of Amazon Braket.”

TCS has also filed 2 patents related to quantum computing –

Patents in Quantum Computing

  • Systems And Method for Solving Quadratic Unconstrained D-ary Optimization (QUDO) Problems by Quantum Computing – This will facilitate the modelling and solving of optimization problems where the variables can take multiple (integer) values, with applications in logistics, supply chain, finance, energy, communications, etc., just to name a few.
  • Method and System for Quantum-Enhanced Image Segmentation – Classical deep learning was enhanced with quantum interventions at strategic locations of the network architecture. This patent focuses on applying this approach to to the task of segmentation of specific objects within real-world, high-resolution images.
