Germany’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) has been very active in investing to build a quantum ecosystem in Germany. This includes pledging a total of €878 million in funding for the development of quantum technologies and quantum computing. Majority of that funding (€740 million) is being invested through DLR – German Aerospace Center (please read our recent story on DLR here). “The German government’s investment indicate how serious it is about quantum computing in Germany,” says Asha-Maria Sharma, computing industry expert at the German government agency Germany Trade & Invest.
This week, BMWK has awarded a contract to software company QMWare and cloud specialist IONOS, along with the University of Stuttgart and the Fraunhofer FOKUS research institute to build out a project called SeQenC. This project will serve as a platform for quantum computing applications for German industry – a Quantum Business Cloud service and a first of its kind for Germany.
While the initial funding numbers are not clear, the project itself will run for 3 years with additional investments down the line and with a focus on telecommunications, logistics, finance, automotive and energy markets.
